Learn to listen, listen to learn

What is it?

The Learn to Listen, Listen to Learn strategy provides students with the opportunity to engage in rich discussion about a topic. This resource provides an overview of the strategy and clear steps to support implementation. Note: *modifications to the complexity of the topic and language used may allow for this strategy to be used in elementary grades. Practitioners might also modify aspects of this strategy (ex: step one) to use only oral text as a way to target listening comprehension.

This resource requires the following modifications to explicitly target listening comprehension:
  • shift the burden of decoding/encoding onto the educator (i.e., the educator should read/write instead of the student(s)).
  • shift the avenue of critical thinking from writing to discussion (i.e., instead of students writing they should discuss).
